after-image

after-image
Image seen after the cessation of a prolonged or intense stimulation of the eye. After-images are frequently cited as examples of purely ‘mental’ things which are yet coloured, disproving the claim that only real expanses of space can be coloured. Caused by the temporary decrease of sensitivity of the receptors that have been stimulated, they have the complementary colour to the original light.
